Rural Crime police in the Gundagai and Cootamundra areas say they hope a sentence of 3 years and 6 months in prison, with a non-parole period of 18 months, handed down to a rural crime offender this week will act as a deterrent.

While not detailing the particulars of the case, police say the offender had been arrested and charged over a recent spate of crimes in the area, including the theft of fuel and equipment, and break and enter offences.

In handing down the sentence the magistrate spoke of the need for the message to be passed on to the community, to deter people from committing these types of crimes.
