Council workers preparing Beckwith Street for resealing yesterday uncovered a suspected case of coal tar, with Council saying the site has now been excavated and the material removed.

Prolonged exposure to coal tar can be dangerous to health, but if it’s covered and undisturbed, it is not harmful.

Coal tar was historically used as an alternative to bitumen, especially when bitumen supplies were short.

Engineers estimate the Beckwith Street material was likely laid in the 1940s, during World War II.
