Some of our most outstanding local residents have been awarded Australia Day honours, with the Riverina’s smaller towns taking the spotlight this year.

Order of Australia Medals have gone to Rose Lehmann for services to Lockhart, Melvyn Mayer for services to Coolamon and to radio broadcast production, Robert Menzies from Coolamon for service to local government and to Coolamon, and Neville Thompson from Temora, for service to agriculture and Temora.

One of the Riverina’s most famous sporting names was also included, Barellan's Evonne Goolagong-Cawley named a Companion in the General Division for eminent services to tennis, and as an advocate for the health, education and wellbeing of young indigenous people.
