Locals urged to bank in person

Cootamundra MP Steph Cooke says she cares little for the justifications the big banks are throwing at local communities, for closing branches, especially when they post billions of dollars in annual profit.

Ms Cooke made an impassioned speech in State Parliament, saying the recent branch closure decisions undermine the fabric of regional communities.

One factor claimed to be contributing to the demise of small bank branches, is the increasing use of internet banking, but Ms Cooke says it still leaves large sections of the community, without a way to manage their money.

She's calling on locals to make a point of walking into their local branch to conduct their transactions with a human, so as not to give banks, or any other large corporation, an excuse to let people go.
