Protest Calling For Family Recognition

Wagga and Riverina Grandparents who are raising their grandchildren on a full-time basis will hold a protest march in Wagga today, calling for greater acknowledgement of their role, and recognition that they are not foster carers, but family.

The protest will get underway from 10am at the Wagga City Council building, also raising awareness about the inequality in financial support between Grandparents raising their Grandchildren, foster carers and adoptive foster carers.

The group says currently, Grandparents are subjected to the same lengthy assessments, medical examinations and criminal history checks as potential foster carers, and are required to seek permission from Family and Community Services to travel interstate with Grandchildren to visit extended families.
