The NSW government says a ‘suitably robust’ and ‘independent’ investigation is underway into claims of inappropriate water use in the Murray Darling Basin, raised in a media report this week.

It's alleged water earmarked for the environment under the Basin Plan has been used to irrigate cotton crops in the Barwon-Darling.

Water Minister Niall Blair says NSW remains committed to the Murray Darling Basin Plan, while seeking the best deal for NSW communities within that framework.

Meantime, NSW Greens’ Water Spokesperson Jeremy Buckingham, says the Minister must refer the matter to the Independent Commission Against Corruption.
