Well known Bunbury City Councillor Joel McGuinness has resigned from his position at Bunbury City Council, effective from early March.

Cr McGuinness has accepted a new role in Victoria as CEO of the Geelong Performing Arts Centre.

Cr McGuiness has been very active in the Bunbury community for seven years, serving as Councillor since 2014 and General Manager of the Bunbury Regional Centre.

He was awarded the 2014 South West Business Person of the Year, with his arts company JAM Creative behind the successful Bunbury Fringe Festival.

He also organised the Bunbury "Rally For Love" event last year to show support for marriage equality.

Cr McGuiness said he is looking forward to the opportunity at Geelong Performing Arts Centre, but is sad to be leaving the Southwest. “I am incredibly excited about this opportunity to work at CEO level as part of another awesome community in Geelong, yet of course, I will miss Bunbury and the great friendships and connections made here over the past seven years,” Cr McGuinness said.

“I love Bunbury and the community here and am incredibly proud of our achievements in arts and culture, as well as my contribution as part of the City Council.”

Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan wished Cr McGuinness the best for his new role in Victoria, saying he will be missed in Bunbury.

“Joel has been a very passionate advocate for the arts and the community prior to and during his time on Council.”
