Motorists are being urged to stay safe while driving as Operation Stay Alert kicks off for the long weekend.

Driving tired is one of the biggest killers on NSW roads, with 83 people losing their lives last year due to lack of sleep.

Double Demerit points will be in force and apply for all speeding, seat belt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offenses during this period.

Roads and Maritime and Freight Minister, Melinda Pavey, says that we need to mindful of others on the road.

Sunraysia youth between the ages of 16 to 24 now have the chance to apply for the Macpherson Smith Rural Foundation's Rural Chances Scholarship.

The $5,000 scholarships are for TAFE students and those with apprenticeships that are facing significant or social challenges and want to further their education.

Students can also apply for up to $2,000 programs to help with costs like course fees, tools of trade and travel costs.

Nationals Member for Mildura, Peter Crisp, says that the Rural Chances Scholarship is a fantastic opportunity for vocational students.

Email is the leading way scammers will target our older regional residents.

New data from Consumer Affairs Victoria revealed around 1 in 5 Victorians aged 55 years and older were targeted in 2016 losing over $4 million dollars.

The Victorian Government says that local men's shed organisations and libraries are equipped to educate residents.

Member for Mildura, Peter Crisp, has held discussions with the city's Mayor and an expert in rail, putting plans in place for a survey of freight and public transport in the region.

The survey is being proposed to boost productivity in the area, with securing funds the next step in the process.

Mr Crisp says to maximise transportation they will need to know how to best move people and products around the region and across the State, plus, how much the improvements will cost.

Round 8 is set to kick off tomorrow in the Sunraysia Football and Netball League.

South Mildura will look to get on the board when they take on Imperials. Merbein & Red Cliffs is set to be an exciting encounter at Kenny Park, Ouyen United will be out to bounce back against Wentworth, while Mildura & Robinvale-Euston sets up as the match of the day.
