The Murray Darling Association, which represents local governments across the Basin, has added its support to calls for an independent public inquiry into allegations of water misappropriation in the Basin and possible irregularities in the state-based regulations.

National President of the MDA, David Thurley, says that the group favours an independent public inquiry over the Prime Minister’s proposal of a compliance review by the Murray Darling Basin Authority.

The MDBA was not implicated in any of the allegations, however, Cr Thurley says that it’s essential that any inquiry is able to independently distinguish and report on the issues for which the NSW Government has responsibility which they feel it would be unfair to ask the MDBA to do.
