Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources David Littleproud has joined Mallee MP Andrew Broad to announce funding to implement the National Citrus Bio Security Surveillance Strategy.
The scheme will work to combat pests that threaten the citrus industry.
$352,000 has been announced, for the launch of the Coalition Government’s ten year national strategy to combat pests like harmful bacteria and insects.
The investment includes the appointment of a steering committee to oversee the new program and the recruitment of a National Citrus Surveillance Coordinator.
The investment is an addition to 9 million in funding announced last year for a surveillance network for pests.
Mallee MP Andrew has welcomed the strategy and funding, saying keeping the region free of pests is essential to the local economy, jobs and livelihoods of many of this region’s blockies.
Locals who see exotic fruit flies, damaged fruit or anything unusual, can report it to the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline 1800 084 881.
