The Greater Sunraysia Pest Free Area have put out the call for more locals to sign up for it's free tree removal scheme, as a part of an ongoing effort to protect local fruit from the fruit fly.
The group has already seen a flood of registrations, with over 160 trees removed in the past month, and over 850 removed in the last year alone.
The program works to protect Sunraysia's horticulture industry, with the fruit fly the number one insect bio-security threat to the health of the sector.
The group are now focusing their energies on fruit flies that live and breed in our area, as opposed to fruits being brought into the region.
GSPFA IDC Chair Karen Hensgen says removing trees can create a big impact on breeding cycles.
