A tanker driver has had to be freed from under his rig after it overturned on the Pacific Motorway north of Sydney, closing both sides of the road.

The 59-year-old was ejected from his semi-trailer and trapped beneath the cabin with his arm pinned and partially submerged in pooling water, according to CareFlight.

Emergency services worked for about 45 minutes to free him after his vehicle, carrying 20 tonnes of bitumen, flipped near the Berowra exit of the M1 shortly before 12.30pm on Thursday.

A rescue helicopter landed nearby so a critical care medical crew could tend to the man who's now in a serious but stable condition in Sydney's North Shore Hosptial.

The motorway was reopened about two and half hours after the crash but motorists were advised to limit speed in the area of the crash.
