Car Ploughs Into Graves At Sydney Cemetery

An alleged drunk-driver is lucky to be alive and is facing a massive expenses bill after ploughing his car through a sandstone wall and into the Randwick cemetery early this morning.

It is understood that 15 head stones will need to be repaired, including a war grave, while council needs to get a crane in to remove the badly damaged Mercedes which ended up flipped on its roof.

Chief Inspector Michael Merrett says speed was definitely a factor.

"In the cemetery there's a large number of blocks from that wall that have been thrown some 30 or 40 metres which indicates the significance of the impact and the energy that's been dissipated in the collision," he said.
