Chaos As Sydney Bus Drivers Strike

Sydneysiders who catch the bus to work or school will need to rethink their travel arrangements today.

Over 12 hundred drivers are planning a strike, over plans to privatise some services. It affects routes in the Inner West and Southern suburbs, with 1200 drivers walking off the job at Leichhardt, Burwood, Kingsgrove and Tempe depots.

In a late night siting the Industrial Relations Commission has ruled the action as illegal, meaning drivers not turning up to work won't be paid.

Transport Minister Andrew Constance is "imploring" drivers to clock-on, so customers can get to school and work on time, with 59 regular bus routes and some 165 school services potentially being impacted.

RTBU Bus Division Secretary Chris Preston said that while members were deeply apologetic about inconveniencing the public, they felt compelled to respond to Minister Constance’s outrageous attack on public transport.

“There is one person to blame for this stoppage and that is Minister Constance.”
