An elderly man has died after his house went up in flames at St Ives overnight, after initially escaping the blaze.
The 81 year old's body was found inside the home on Blackburn Street just before 7pm. Firefighters say when they arrived the home was engulfed in flames.
"It was a very intense fire, the fire was reportedly through the roof on the arrival of the brigade. It's alleged that the gentleman was outside with neighbours upon hearing his smoke alarm, he has re-entered the building and unfortunately doing so cost him his life" Fire Inspector John Paull said.
It's not known why he went back inside and the cause of the fire is also under investigation.
