Garbage Truck Driver Charged After Man Died In Accident Yesterday

The driver of a garbage truck has been charged after an incident which resulted in a man dying in Redfern yesterday.

It is alleged by police that the 35-year-old driver was going along Bourke Lane at roughly 8am when he mounted the footpath, running over a man sleeping on a mattress outside a home.

The driver stopped and called emergency services.

However, the 31-year-old man died at the scene.

The driver was taken to Sydney Eye Hospital for mandatory testing.

He was then taken to Redfern Police Station and charged with dangerous driving occassioning death, and negligent driving occasioning death.

His licence has been suspended and confiscated, and the Rockdale man was granted bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on June 18.
