An emergency ward nurse who reportedly contracted a mystery illness has sadly passed away with his “family by his side”.
The family of Russell Marsh confirmed on Friday the 39-year-old died after spending several weeks in a coma, Nine News reports.
“With a heavy heart I would like to tell everyone Russell passed away early this morning with his family by his side,” sister-in-law Jasmine Nguyen wrote in a statement.
“He fought a hard battle over the past 4 weeks but unfortunately it was a battle he did not win.
“We would like to thank everyone for their support, prayers, donation and love.”
Mr Marsh’s family believe he became unwell days after being coughed on by a patient at Fairfield Hospital, a claim the hospital’s General Manager Arnold Tammekand rejects.
“Fairfield Hospital has conducted an investigation and can confirm there is no connection between a patient for whom Mr Marsh was caring and Mr Marsh’s illness,” Mr Tammekand said.
"It is inappropriate for us to speculate further on what might have caused his illness.
"Mr Marsh, like all health staff members, received regular immunisations and followed standard precautions to reduce his risk of exposure to the various conditions that come through the hospital."
The online fundraiser originally established for Mr Marsh’s recovery raised almost $27,000.
