Residents near Coffs Harbour have been hit by a 4.2 magnitude earthquake off the coast of the regional city, as experts note a “pattern” of tremors in recent times.

Seismologist Phil Commons told the ABC that today’s earthquake at approximately 1:28pm follows a series of 36 smaller incidents between South West Rocks and Macksville since last Friday.

Although he was reassuring these posed no threat of tsunamis, Mr Commons said the tremors could be leading towards a larger earthquake.

"It's difficult to say what will happen in the future," he said.

"There is a pattern, a well-known pattern, of foreshocks — small earthquakes can build up to bigger ones.

"We don't really see that happening here. It's just a swarm where we will get dozens, possibly hundreds of them and they'll just eventually die out."

Earlier this morning, the Geoscience Australia website also detected a magnitude-3.1 quake at Bellingen.
