Sydney is copping a drenching and has already recorded the heaviest rain in four months.

The heavens opened-up overnight with more than 50mm falling in the CBD, there was over 30mm at the airport and forecasters are predicting we could see as much as 100mm over the next few days.

"So this rain will continue throughout today; we are looking at the rain being heaviest in the east with and some thunderstorms also a possibility, and much drier for the western suburbs today"

Weatherzone's Kim Westcott also saying "around the city we've picked up 53mm - its been quite heavy around Little Bay, and Chatswood and Rose Bay as well, and further west we are looking at lighter falls so generally less than 20mm"
