Sydney Nurse In Coma After Patient 'Coughed' On Him

A Sydney nurse is in a coma after a patient coughed on him, according to his family.

Registered nurse Russell Marsh, 39, works at the emergency ward at Fairfield Hospital and has been on life support for the last two weeks at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

He is understood to have contracted a fever two days after complaining of an incident at work in February.

It is alleged that he told his wife Helen that on February 12, a sick patient coughed all over him.

Despite extensive testing, doctors are still unsure about the cause of Mr Marsh's illness.

They have been unable to culture the virus, and he is currently in isolation.

"They are starting to slow that machine down just to see how his body starts to react. They can't leave him on the machine long term," Ms Marsh said.

"He is on a dialysis machine also, so they will start to remove him from that machine too to see if his kidneys start to function. If not, then they will put him back on that."

A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the family with medical expenses.
