A Police investigation has opened after a fuel tanker exploded into flames on the M5 this morning.

Firefighters, Ambulance and Police were called to the scene around 6am this morning, to find the tanker up in flames.

According to nine.com.au, the driver managed to escape unharmed and is currently cooperating with Police. 

At one stage, the M5 was closed between King Georges Road and Kingsgrove Road in both directions, but all Westbound lanes have since re-opened. 

Eastbound lanes remain closed. 

Anyone travelling to Sydney Airport is advised to allow plenty of additional travel time.
