Following news earlier this week that a playground in East Albury was destroyed by fire, another Border playground has been set alight by vandals.  The equipment at the Gordon Craig Park adjacent to Moorefield Park Drive was set on fire overnight with damage estimated to be more than $30,000.

The playground, with the exception of the swings, will have to be removed as a result of the damage.

Once Wodonga Police have completed their assessment of the site, the council will begin the clean-up and removal of the equipment.

The council will undergo consultation with the community through its Playometer ahead of replacing the playground in the new financial year.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Debra Mudra said the council was disappointed that this type of vandalism occurred in our community.

"This kind of damage not only means a cost to council and the community but it also impacts on our many families with young children and limits their access to outdoor play spaces in our city," Ms Mudra said.

"The council has more than 70 parks and playgrounds across the city which provide safe spaces for our residents, parents, grandparents and young children, to get outside, exercise and have fun.

"It's disappointing that this unnecessary damage means some families won't get to enjoy this space for the holidays."

Council asks anyone with information to contact Wodonga Police on (02) 6049 2600 or CrimeStoppers.
