Farrer MP Sussan Ley has braved the Federal Parliament's first sitting of the year in Canberra today, outside of cabinet.

The Albury-based Member was propelled to the front bench in late 2014, but resigned from her posts as Health, Sport and Aged Care Minister last month over a travel expenses scandal, which erupted after she purchased a home on the Gold Coast while visiting Brisbane on government duties.

Meantime, Indi MP Cathy McGowan says while the region's lost itself a strong advocate in Government, we may expect to see Ms Ley speak up more for local issues.

Ms McGowan has identified the support for local dairy farmers hit by the milk price crisis, access to childcare for the North East and a stronger consideration of regional and rural Australians in the upcoming budget, as her key platforms into the new parliamentary year.
