North East Emergency Services Urge Caution Ahead of Cold Snap

Victoria State Emergency Service is urging the public to stay informed and prepare for cold, ice, and snow from Friday and into the weekend, particularly on north east roads.

The Bureau of Meteorology expects snow down to 600m, including areas where snow does not regularly fall like Beechworth and Stanley, and conditions below zero in multiple areas across the north east.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution, drive to the conditions and carry snow chains when travelling through Alpine resorts. Black ice may form on roads in some areas. Black ice freezes clear on the road surface, making it difficult to see. Drivers are encouraged to travel at safe speeds, use their lights in low visibility & allow plenty of stopping distance between your car and the car in front.

“Regardless of the warnings people are still being caught entering the Alpine resorts without carry vehicle snow chains.  This presents a road safety issue and ties up police resources unnecessarily,” said Paul Hargreaves, Hume region emergency management inspector.

“When the public fail to drive to the conditions, they not only put their own lives at risk, but also the lives of other road users, and emergency services personnel,” said Brendan Corboy of the Victoria State Emergency Service.

SES also remind north east residents and visitors of the risk of avalanche in remote backcountry areas of the Victorian Alps due to continuing snowfall and wind. Visitors to Victorian snowfields are encouraged to ski, snowboard, and hike within patrolled resort areas.

Minor flood warnings remain in place around the north east catchment, including the Ovens river at Wangaratta, Seven Creeks at Euroa, Kiewa River from Mongans Bridge to Bandiana & a final Flood Warning is in place for the Murray River upstream of Lake Hume.

The Great Alpine Road is closed at Wangaratta due to flooding, and convoying arrangements are in place from Harrietville to Mt Hotham. Further road closure information is available at www.traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au
