With the annual pet registration renewal date fast approaching, Wodonga residents are being reminded to register their four-legged family members by Monday, April 10.

Wodonga Council Team Leader Compliance Craig McClanahan said all pets, including both dogs and cats, must be registered by that date or owners risk a $311 fine.

“Registration renewal notices were distributed in March, giving owners plenty of time to register their pet prior to the due date,” Mr McClanahan said.

“It is also a timely reminder to ensure your pet is wearing a tag with your contact number on it and that it’s microchipped (with up-to-date contact details), so our rangers can return the animal promptly if it escapes.”

In Wodonga, there are currently 7322 dogs registered and 1953 cats registered, with the top pet names being Bella, Charlie, Max and Molly.

The top dog breed is Jack Russell, followed by Staffordshire Terrier and Maltese Terrier.

“While registration numbers are strong, we believe there are significantly more pets in the Wodonga area,” Mr McClanahan said.

The council urges those owners to do the right thing by their pets by registering by April 10. There are discounts available for pets that meet certain criteria, such as those that are desexed or more than 10 years of age.

“We will be conducting a doorknock in May to ensure that all dogs and cats over three months of age are registered,” he said.

Registration fees provide a service for owners to report lost and found pets, for council officers to respond to calls about wandering animals or noise complaints, to monitor pet shops and boarding kennels, and more.

The annual date for animal registrations is set by the Domestic Animals Act 1994, not local councils.
