Vandals have dealt a blow to families in East Albury by incinerating a children’s playground.

Most of the equipment at the park in Eastern Circuit was destroyed or badly damaged in the fire, which was lit yesterday afternoon.

AlburyCity staff today fenced off the playground to prevent access, amid concerns for community safety.

Firefighters from the Albury Civic Station extinguished the blaze after receiving multiple emergency calls from residents.

The cost of the damage is still being assessed but the playground will need to be fully replaced, with the cost to ratepayers to run into several thousand dollars.

AlburyCity Mayor Kevin Mack said he was appalled by the damage.

“This was an attack not only on the ratepayers of Albury who will have to foot the bill but more directly, it was also an attack on local families,” he said.

“The sight of melted and twisted playground equipment is distressing for mums and dads who simply want a safe place for their children to exercise and have fun, and the mindless vandals who caused the damage should hang their heads in shame.”

Work on replacing the equipment will get under way soon.

The attack has been reported to police and anyone with information is urged to contact the Albury Police Station on 02 6023 9299 or CrimeStoppers.

“I urge the community to come forward with any piece of information, no matter how small,” Cr Mack said.

“By tracking down the arsonists we can hopefully send a message that we won’t stand for the destruction of community assets, especially those that are enjoyed by children who now no longer have a playground of their own.”
