BONEGILLA ISLAND HAZARD REDUCTION BURN

The Victorian Country Fire Authority with assistance from the NSW Rural Fire Service will be undertaking a fuel reduction burn on Bonegilla Island on Saturday 20th October 2018. The island.
Members of the public in East Albury, Thurgoona and surrounds may see smoke visible throughout the day, and an increase in fire appliances in the vicinity of Waterworks Rd.
Operational Officer John Osmond said “Whilst NSW had entered the Bush Fire Danger Period, Victoria is yet to commence. These works are vital to minimise bush fire hazards and, the works Victorian authorities are undertaking will directly help to reduce the risk of fire in NSW”
“This also allows local CFA/RFS crews to work together, and familiarise themselves with their counterparts from respective services. We wholly encourage cross-border relations and both agencies work well together and have provided assistance to each other throughout the years”. Operational Officer Osmond stated.
Hazard Reduction burning is one of the mechanisms that both services use to reduce the risk associated with bush fires that may occur in the hot summer months. Reducing the fuel load in areas that interface the bush helps reduce the intensity of fires that may impact these areas.
