Annual door knock starts today to check pets are registered

Wodonga Council starts its annual doorknock today to check pets are registered.

Regi-check will conduct the doorknock on behalf of Wodonga Council, with Regi-check ‘ambassadors’ knocking on doors across Wodonga over the next four weeks.

“We conduct the doorknock to remind people that their animals need to be registered,” Team Leader of compliance Craig McClanahan said.

“The council is encouraging those people who have not yet registered their pets to phone Wodonga Council’s Community Focus team on (02) 6022 9300 and register their pets immediately.”

Each Regi-check ambassador is trained, will carry identification and will be wearing a hi-vis vest. They can provide advice and information about how important it is to register your pet – but please note they will not be collecting money, and all application forms must be lodged with Wodonga Council.

The council’s team leader compliance, Craig McClanahan, said the aim of the doorknock was to educate residents about their responsibilities as pet owners.

“While registration numbers are strong, we believe there are significantly more pets in the Wodonga area,” Mr McClanahan said.

“People should have registered any new animals by April 10 this year,” he said.

Mr McClanahan said pet registration was more than just a lost and found service and allowed the council to know how many pets there were in the city and also helped fund the operation of the pound and ranger services.

“Registered pets can also be returned to owners quickly if they become lost,” he said.

“It is easy for us to identify owners of lost pets through the registration database and return them as soon as possible to their owners.”

Owners who don’t re-register their pet (whether it’s a dog and cat) risk a $311 fine.
All pets should also be microchipped and owners should keep their contact details up-to-date so any stray pets can be returned promptly.

Today’s trivia:
• In Wodonga, there are currently 7450 dogs and 1982 cats registered.
• The top pet names are Bella, Charlie, Max and Molly.
• The top dog breed is Jack Russell, followed by Staffordshire Terrier and Maltese Terrier.
