Following the torching of two playgrounds on The Border this week, vandals have struck again in Wodonga overnight with trees and a barbecue shelter damaged at Valentina Gillard Park in Oakmont Circuit.

Between 12 and 15 newly planted trees were snapped or damaged and the roof over the barbecue shelter was ripped off.

Council crews have reinstated the roof and are assessing the damaged trees.

Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said she was dismayed at the continued destruction of public property and the community had a right to be angry at such senseless vandalism.

"Our parks and playgrounds are popular with all ages and the council has always ensured they are well-maintained with equipment to play or exercise or just as spaces to relax and spend time with family and friends," Cr Speedie said.

"The fact that there are people who can show a blatant disregard and lack of respect for our city and its people is, quite frankly, very disheartening.

"I urge all our community remain vigilant in helping to safeguard our favourite spaces and places, be on the lookout for suspicious behaviour, keep an ear out for unexpected noises and report any suspicious behaviour to the police.

"A community of 39,000 sets of eyes is the best security we have in ensuring our neighbourhoods are safe from the scourge of graffiti and vandalism.

"My hope is that this does not stop our people enjoying the parks and playgrounds near their homes."

Earlier this week a playground in East Albury was torched, similarly Gordon Craig Park in Wodonga was set alight causing in excess of $30,000 worth of damage.
