Townsville residents have been warned to be extra vigilant after new RACQ data showed the region was one of the worst locations in the State for car thefts.
RACQ spokesperson Kirsty Clinton said 224 cars had been stolen in the Townsville region since 2015.
“This data proves Townsville is a hot spot for car theft and is in fact the third worst region in Queensland for this type of crime,” Ms Clinton said.
“Local residents need to be vigilant about car security to ensure they’re not victims in the future.”
Ms Clinton said thieves were often opportunistic, and there were some simple steps vehicle owners could take to avoid being targeted.
“Always lock your car doors and keep the windows up, park in a secure garage or well-lit, well-populated location and never leave valuables on display in your vehicle,” she said.
“The release of this data also serves as a good reminder for everyone to check their insurance policy is up to date.”
