Special Busselton Bird Walk To The Vasse Estuary This Weekend

Water levels in the estuary are the highest for several years and this has attracted a large number of waterbirds, so thousands of birds and many different species are certain to be seen.

The Vasse and Wonnerup estuaries regularly host up to 35,000 waterbirds - swan, duck, egret, heron, sandpipers, avocet, stilt, dotterels and dozens more species, including migratory waders from the northern hemisphere.

The Busselton Naturalists Club will be hosting an excursion this Sunday that will start at 8.30am. The meeting point being the gate into the Tuart Forest National Park located on Tuart Drive some 300 metres towards Busselton from the Layman Road roundabout.

After a one kilometre walk along a sand track through the unique Tuart Forest, walkers will reach the eastern edge of the Vasse estuary where many thousands of waterbirds will be visible.

The excursion is free of charge and will last 2.5 to 3 hours but participants MUST wear enclosed footwear and long trousers because of the risk of snakes and mosquitoes at this time of year.

Participants should bring binoculars with them to allow better views of the birdlife but a few spare sets will be available for sharing on the day.

The excursion is well suited to families with children as the walk is likely to see kangaroos, Christmas spiders and a range of other interesting wildlife.
