Participation rates were slightly down but the majority of fishers were well behaved as marron season opened on Sunday.

A combined effort from police, the Water Corporation and Department of Fisheries has created a taskforce to ensure the State’s marron stocks are protected during the season.

Operation Capulin was implemented for the annual four-week season which began at midday on Sunday and will close on February 5.

The operation has already been successful, after fisheries officers apprehended a 36-year-old Collie man near the Harvey Dam during pre-season patrols.

Supervising fisheries and marine officer for Bunbury Graeme Hall said rivers in the South West were heavily fished on the opening day, producing some good catches.

He expected an increased number of fishers on coming weekends.
