The City of Bunbury has thrown its support behind a new athletics event set to hit the region in April 2018.

The Bunbury Geographe Gift 2018 will be just like the famous Stawell Gift, which will coincide with the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and will be added to the national athletics calendar.

The idea is that of Bunbury businessman Colin Piacentini and local figure Tom Dillon and Jo O'Dea, who approached the Bunbury Events Advisory Group in January about the concept.

Bunbury mayor Gary Brennan says it's great to see locals approaching council with ideas to stimulate not just the local economy, but tourism as well.

"The City is pleased to provide initial support for the Bunbury Geographe Gift 2018 in anticipation the event is a great success and it can continue into future years," Mr Brennan said.

The City of Bunbury has injected $60,000 in funding to the event, subject to other funding and sponsorship being confirmed.

The weekend of events for the Bunbury Geographe Gift 2018 is expected to include a family fun day and road race on April 28, followed by the professional races to be held on the Sunday.
