Residents of the South West are being urged to prepare for some potentially nasty weather over the next couple of days. Last night, more than 7,000 homes in Australind, Eaton, Glen Iris & Bunbury were without power after heavy rain overnight caused outages.

A strong ridge of high pressure is developing to the south of the State. A tropical low lies inland over the western Pilbara, is expected to continue moving southwest and cross the cross back overt the water near Carnarvon later Thursday or early Friday. A rain band associated with this system lies over the south of the state, and should linger for a couple days.

For the 24 hours to 9 am Friday, widespread rainfall totals of 20 mm to 50 mm with isolated totals of up to 100 mm being forecast for the South West District.

Similar rainfall is forecast for the 24 hours to 9 am Saturday. River rises and areas flooding are possible in response to forecast rainfall.

Catchments likely to be affected include:

Collie River

Preston River

Blackwood River

Warre

Shannon River

Donnelly River

Busselton Coastal Rivers

DFES advises people and communities to be aware that flooding is possible and be prepared to relocate equipment and livestock. Watch water levels.
