While a lot of famous Aussies are recognised today, some of regional WA’s most committed citizens and unsung heroes have also been honoured this Australia Day.

The recipients range from foster carers, local organisers, ambos and more.

Margaret River’s Dr. Fred Affleck has been awarded one of the highest honours in Australia, receiving an AO which is the Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia.

Dr. Affleck receiving the honour for distinguished service to transport and logistics through his leadership roles as well as a supporter of the performing arts in WA.

He has held roles at numerous organisations including the Australian Freight Councils Network, Australian Logistics Council and National Transport Commission.

Of late, Dr. Affleck has become the president of Arts Margaret River and has been the president of the Patrons and Friends of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Susan Downes has received an AM for her service to rural and remote medicine in WA and also to indigenous health.

Her work includes being part of the Rural Women’s General Practitioner Program which included visiting rural locations throughout the Wheatbelt, remote islands and indigenous communities.

Also receiving an AM is Cynthia McMorran OAM for her significant service to the community of Moora, regional development and natural resource management and to aged care.

Not only a councillor for over 20 years in Moora, she has also been a justice of the peace, been part of the WA Country Health Service and in 2015 awarded the Royal Agricultural Society of WA’s Rural Community Achiever Award.
