Race walking champion Garry Hastie is among the many locals warming up for this week’s SWAS-Telstra Fun Run and Relay. Hastie, who at 55 last month claimed his fifteenth open race walking state title, will compete in the five kilometre senior walking category of the community event on Saturday morning. He will join others walking or running around the Leschenault Inlet for fun, prizes and to raise funds for a cause.

All proceeds raised from the third annual event will go towards the South West Academy of Sport, which helps talented young South West residents excel on and off the sports field. As well as bring a fundraiser, the fun-filled race aims to encourage teamwork, fitness and community spirit.

People are encouraged to form a team of four with friends, family, peers or colleagues and compete in the 10 kilometre relay. Running enthusiasts can also choose to complete the 10 kilometre run solo, and there are also five kilometre running and walking categories available for individuals.

The SWAS-Telstra Fun Run and Relay is made possible by Telstra, the South West Sports Centre and the South West Development Commission.
