Rocking A Friday Night On The Beach

Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan appeared ecstatic late on Friday night at the big crowd and fun feeling at Vat 2 after another successful summer concert on the beach.

Jenny Spencer from Vat 2 said she'd never felt such a happy vibe from 1000 people in one place and one time.

Such that is was on the beach as punters from all over the SW and some from further afield came to see Jon Stevens on his greatest hits tour.

Early in the evening all eyes were looking skyward hoping a threatening storm would bypass the event and thankfully it did, even the wind stayed away and the water of the inner harbour was like glass.

The scene was not lost on Jon Stevens and his band who marvelled at what was a divine setting for one of only 2 shows in WA as part of the tour.

The evening started with the traditional openers from Bunbuy's Rock and Roll High School, followed by Proud Mary who slayed their set paying tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival, and then it was the main event which saw the dance area at the front of the stage filled from the get go.

Often times an artist's voice and presence can be diminished after 30 years of belting night after night, not so Mr Stevens. Not one bit!

The low notes vibrated and the falsetto was perfect, especially on his tribute for his Mum, RIP Millie, and the way he prowelled the stage lit up the crowd.

The set included songs from Stevens' back catalogue with selections from Noiseworks, The Dead Daisies and his latest album Starlight, performed acoustically, followed by a 3 songs set from his time with INXS which had the crowd right back on thieir feet.

Very few people on earth have or had the blatant charisma and sexuality of Michael Hutchence so stepping ino those shoes was a huge ask, and if he doesn't reach the same heights, Jon Stevens misses by the slimmest of margins.

The happiest lady on the night was Vat 2 host, the notoriously shy Jenny Spencer who we even managed to coax on stage after the encore for a hug with Jon, having provided yet another memorable night for the city.
