Scam Watch: Suncorp Text Messages

Be aware and don't get caught out

Scams are unfortunately an increasing trend through email, phone and text message.

It's important to know how to spot a scam as most companies, especially financial institutions will have information on their websites about how to spot fraudulant messages.

So my surprise last night to receive a scam message that said it was from Suncorp.

"Your SUNCORP account has been temporary locked. To restore visit *insert website here*"

So the first trigger for me was "I don't have anything to do with Suncorp", followed by the poor grammar. Then you have the website that showed up in the text that definitely didn't seem legitimate.

But at the same time I was thinking about things like recurring car payments that I have, could it be through insurance repayments etc.

But, as soon as I hit twitter and searched "suncorp scam", I found a host of other people who had been sent similar messages.

It also even goes to Facebook posts from what looks like airline companies offering free flights. While they aren't stealing your banking details, these pages can steal your identity and some private information.

It just requires some vigilance from us as customers to be aware this can go on, and we need to be more active in sorting out whether it's real or not.
