Victoria's coalition opposition wants to ban state school students from using mobile phones in classrooms if it wins government in November – but critics say many schools are already doing this.

The policy, announced today claims ths propsal is not a ban on students taking mobile phones to school, this policy is limited to use of phones during class time

However the Andrews Labor government says many campuses already ban phone use in classes, and the decision should be left to individual schools.

Tim Smith, Shadow minister for education admits the policy is hard to police and they’ll be leaving how the ban was enforced up to individual schools.

He also admitted there would need to be exceptions if phones were needed for classroom activities or if a student had extenuating circumstances.

“But the basic premise is we need a policy across the board on this which is unless there is an exceptionally good reason no mobile phones in class time.”
