Melbourne Victory legend and ex-Socceroos striker Archie Thompson has claimed responsibility for Tim Cahill’s famous corner flag punching goal celebration.

Archie said that he first did the celebration in a friendly against Jamaica in 2005, and that Cahill loved it and asked if he could take it to the Premier League.

“We were at Craven Cottage in London playing against Jamaica, Timmy Cahill was sitting out in the stands, he was injured I think,” Archie said.

“I scored a goal in that game and I run up to the corner flag and started doing kung fu to it.

“After the game Timmy came down to me and said ‘Archie man, that was unbelievable! Do you mind if I take it to the Premier League and we can make it our own?’

“I said ok, he hit the ground running in the Premier League and the World Cup and suddenly it’s his and not mine!”

Archie also discussed Australia’s chances against France and whether or not Cahill will get on the park.
