Brendon Goddard has told Triple M he is still "keeping the door ajar" to play on, but admits as time goes on it might be time to decide to retire.

GODDARD OPENS UP:

Goddard joined Jay Clark and former teammate Joey Montagna on Triple M's Dead Set Legends on Saturday and was asked about what the future holds for him.

The 33-year-old was not offered a contract by Essendon for 2019, potentially putting a 16-year AFL career to an end.

“It still hasn’t sank in yet," he told Triple M.

“There are times when I catch myself thinking that the reality is I won’t be returning to Essendon.

“I’m sure you know, Joey, and I think you’ve told me before that once you finish you go through ebbs and flows.”

Goddard was he was "not sure" about whether he would play on or announce his retirement, but conceded he was "almost getting told" by others that his time at AFL level was over.

“As much as I prepared for the worst case scenario, nothing could prepare me for being in that position and actually hearing the words from ‘Woosha’ and then having to contemplate this is my last game," he said.

“I didn’t want to say anything that I didn’t mean, and that was retiring. I’ve said before that all my effort and my mindset was about playing on, but it was about playing on at Essendon.

“I’m keeping the door ajar, don’t get me wrong. But as time goes on and the more I think about it, maybe it is time.

"I had been feeling really good. That's probably the hardest pill to swallow is that I don't feel like I'm ready, but I'm almost getting told by someone else that nah, nah, we'll make the decision for you and your time's done, that sort of thing."
