Former Eagle and Saint Michael Gardiner has spoken about the sledging he copped as he lined up to kick the winning goal against Geelong in the famous 2009 home and away game.

Gardiner took a massive grab in the goal square with scores level late in the game, with both sides undefeated in round 14.

He knocked out Harry Taylor in the process of taking the grab, and on Dead Set Legends with Leigh Montagna and Jay Clark this morning he said the Geelong players got stuck into him while the sides waited for the big Cat to be stretchered off.

“The stretcher came out (for Harry Taylor) and we probably had two or three or four minutes of the boys sorta getting into me about kicking the goal,” Gardiner said.

“I went back and kicked it and that’s when I produced the tongue, just to stick it up ‘em after them giving me a ribbing!”

Gardiner reminisced about his role in the classic game, where he took seven marks, had 20 hitouts and booted four goals including the winner.
