This morning Ewan was joined by Head of Health in the Limestone Coast, Ngaire Buchanan, to talk about fundraising and the improvements to the Paediatric Ward of the Mt Gambier Hospital.

When I first arrived here - I have had experiences in children's hospitals before - and when I was going around I saw that we were given really great care for our children in terms of clinical care, and support for the families. But what I did see was that we weren't given what I called "the extras for children".

According to Ngaire, the "extras" included catering for children's developmental and emotional health needs, and because children learn in different ways to adults, she believes that games, activities and stimulation are a big part of this.

So she started working with the paediatric ward and the paediatricians to see what they felt was needed to make Mt Gambier Hospital "a great place for our children and their families".

Already fundraisers have been held, including Triple M's GM5FK and the Hospital's superhero ball, allowing for the ward to install new beds, toys and games. The next step is to get the treatment room set up with more equipment for the children, as Ngaire believes that adding "more comfort for the families and for the patients" is vital.

We feel we are part of the community... so we want to provide the best care we can.
