30 August 2018 marks 125 years since the registration of the Great Boulder Lease by William Brookman and Samuel Pearce. The pair, who were acting on behalf of a South Australian syndicate, first discovered gold at what was to become the famous Ivanhoe lease. While Brookman was in Coolgardie registering that lease for the syndicate, Pearce discovered gold further to the east which they pegged and named the ‘Great Boulder’. This name was given in honour of a small alluvial claim of the same name the pair, along with Charles De Rose, had owned in South Australia. This was just prior to their departure to the rich finds in Coolgardie after their engagement as prospectors by the Adelaide Prospecting Party syndicate which was headed by William Brookman’s brother George and George Doolette.
Mr Wilson said the date represents the first use of the name from which the town of Boulder got its name.
