Jay & Dave had a chat with Nitso from Oz Cyclone Chasers this morning to discuss the impending big storms to hit Mackay & the Whitsundays this weekend and the possibility of a cyclone.

"It's looking like it will be our first strong storm day on Friday. There's a big trough system coming east across the state and it's going to cause some pretty big storms over inland areas. Those storms are going to be hurdling towards the coast on Friday afternoon/night," Nitso said.

"There's a fairly good chance they'll be making it to Mackay. Not really sure if they're going to be as strong as they were over those inland areas, but there is still a chance there will be some severe activity on Friday afternoon/night across Mackay region."

But are we expecting a cyclone up our way this season? Is it time to batten down the hatches?

"It only takes one and that's the take-home message. We're more than likely going to see less cyclones this year, but it only does take that one to change your life.

"For Queensland, the average is four in a season. On average, about 25% ends up hitting the coast. So the idea this year is we'll more than likely get less than four," said Nitso.
