Outgoing Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland says it "feels like a good time" to hand over his position.

Sutherland announced on Wednesday morning he would resign from his position, allowing 12 months for Cricket Australia to find his replacement.

He joined Kennedy Molloy to explain his decision.

"It just feels like a good time," he told the show.

"We’re in a good place and a good time to hand over, and I think 17 years is a fair innings, for me who’s unaccustomed to any long innings.

"It's certainly something, for me, that feels right for me and the family."
