Academy Award winner Russell Crowe is flogging a heap of his old movie props.

Crowe - star of Hollywood blockbuster films like Gladiator, A Beautiful MindCinderella Man and American Gangster is currently negotiating his divorce settlement with Danielle Spencer, and he's looking to fund that settlement by selling a bunch of his old film memorabilia.

Some of the items up for sale include a 'boxers protection belt' used in Cinderella Man, a fully functional Roman chariot used in Gladiator, and the violin his character Jack Aubrey played in Master and Commander.

Russell joined Kennedy Molloy today and spoke about the reasoning behind the upcoming auction.

"They are things that I love," Russell told Mick and Jane.

"Some people want to try and read into it and not take it at face value.

"Because I'm a collector I want to clear some room, and I just really want to have less stuff."

Russell also said the process of dividing the former couple's wealth evenly was also a motivator behind selling his props.

"The process of divorce and dividing things, and selling things (was a motivator)," Crowe said, "To be able to deconstruct things so that there's balance and no one feels hard done by."

If you want to purchase any of Rusty's memorabilia; the auction is in Sydney on April 7, which weirdly coincides with his birthday and wedding anniversary.
