As the world counts down the final hours of 2016, Buckingham Palace has been forced to confirm that rumours Queen Elizabeth has died are false.

A fake BBC News twitter account sent the twitter world into panic mode after making a claim in the last 24 hours that the 90 year old head of the Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II had passed away.

The tweet from the account said, "BREAKING: Buckingham Palace announces the death of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 90. Circumstances are unknown. More to follow".

The Queen and husband Prince Phillip have both been laying low since prior to Christmas due to a cold.

Some twitter users also tried to say that British media were covering up the news, however the Palace later made the confirmation of the status of the Queen.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson told The Sun, "The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh continue to recover from their heavy colds".

The user account has now been suspended by Twitter.
