UPDATE:

The alleged attacker has died in hospital after being shot at the scene by officers.

Police are now treating the incident as a terror related attack.

EARLIER:

One person is dead, and two others injured following a stabbing during afternoon peak in Melbourne's Bourke Street.

Police responded to a vehicle on fire in the centre of the city on Friday afternoon.

According to Police the alleged male attacker is now in hospital.

Superintendent David Clayton told media, "Police shot the male in the chest, he is now in a critical condition, under guard, at hospital".

The area is currently cordoned off, with the bomb squad attending the location.

One witness said that after the vehicle burst into flames, a bystander walked up to the driver to see what had happened, and was stabbed.

Police say there are no known links to terrorism at this stage.

“There are no known links to terrorism at this stage. We are keeping an open mind”, Superintendent David Clayton said.

Police were not looking for any other attackers at this stage.
