Footy Fans in Adelaide Are NOT Going To Like This

"I think it's really unfair"

For the first time ever, South Aussie footy fans are not guaranteed to see every Crows and Power away game LIVE, on free-to-air television.

They'll be 5 games for Port Adelaide and the Crows that aren’t going to be broadcasted live on Channel 7. They’re all interstate games, and it’s going to be upsetting for people because not everyone has access to pay-TV and Fox Footy.

Crows CEO, Andrew Fagan joined the boys this morning to discuss:

Roo: What is going on here? A lot of people thought all games were going to be live on air?

Fagan: Yeah obviously that’s been the case for a long, long time - but unfortunately it’s one of the byproducts of doing a record broadcast deal.

All clubs in WA and SA have been told they’ll be giving up 3 of their away games each year. That’s our contribution to the large broadcast pie.

Roo: So is that Channel 7 saying they want to put shows on at the same time? Or have Fox just got the rights to those games?

Fagan: It’s more the second part of that mate, it’s Fox requiring 12 additional games per season on obviously their platform. When these broadcast deals are done, there’s multiple contributing parties. We don’t unfortunately get a say, as clubs. The first time we’d heard about it was when Gil alluded to it at the announcement. My understanding it will be over the course of the next 6 years.

Although it’s disappointing, it’s also worth mentioning, make sure people understand that if they’re Telstra customers, they can access the AFL app for free, which shows all the games live. An opportunity for those people to still watch it for free.

Ditts: I respect what you’re saying but let’s not compare that please. I mean this seriously. We can’t be telling people in 60s, 70s, 80s to say “start downloading your Telstra app”… I think it’s unfair. Gil’s doing his job… but he’s neglecting his fans.

We’re trying to push everyone in this nation towards pay TV, and I think it’s unfair.

Fagan: Let me be very clear… I was just making sure people understood that the opportunity existed, for those that it worked for. It is disappointing, obviously we’d like all our games to be on free to air as they’ve always been. We would like to see clarity in the next broadcast deal, obviously it’s 6 years away, but at least we’ve got protection for 19 out of the 22 games for the next 6 years.
